A West Covina woman accused of embezzlement of nearly $80,000 from three local non-profits will be in court later this month. Veronica Monique Paderez, 38, pleaded not guilty earlier this year to charges that she embezzled funds from the PTA accounts of Vine Elementary School, the West Covina American Little League and the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles. Paderez served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Vines Elementary School PTA. A preliminary audit revealed losses of more than $50,000 from PTA accounts and more than $25,000 from Little League accounts. An unknown amount was taken from a Girl Scout troop account. The alleged embezzlement took place between 2013 and 2015.
Embezzlement is usually a “workplace” crime, and it is often associated with large sums of money, but it can take many forms, some of which don’t involve cash at all. Theft can be charged as a felony or as a misdemeanor, depending upon the facts of the case. When you’ve been accused of a serious workplace felony, your freedom, your future ability to find work, and your family’s financial future is on the line.
