A woman with a long history of identity theft has been arrested in Los Angeles. Maria Christina Johnson, originally from Washington State, was arrested after police were called to The Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara, registered under the name of one of her victims.
According to police, she accumulated more than $100,000 in charges while staying at the hotel, and the total losses attributed to her may exceed $250,000. Typically, she met her victims through online dating sites or online home rental sites. After gaining access to the victim’s home and stealing his or her identity, she checked into high-end hotels, spent freely and moved frequently to avoid arrest. She was previously convicted of 11 felonies, including identity theft, grand theft and credit card fraud.
