A former administrator for a church and synagogue that share a property in Hermosa Beach has been charged with embezzlement after officials at Temple Shalom reported a number of checks missing. Celina Maldonado, 36, of Los Angeles performed clerical work for the temple and St. Cross Episcopal Church.
Hermosa Beach detectives say that Maldonado deposited the checks written to both the temple and the church into her personal bank account. Working with bank investigators, the detectives discovered a recent history of diversion of funds from the temple and church into Maldonado’s personal account. The checks deposited by Maldonado had a combined value of about $50,000. Maldonado had worked at the properties since 2008.
