LA Embezzlement Case Closes With 6-year Sentence

The woman, who served as the agency’s director, pleaded guilty in August to five counts of misappropriating public funds. She also pleaded guilty to four embezzlement counts and two counts of preparing false documents. Additionally, she admitted to one count of filing a false tax return.

Investigators say that the woman and her co-defendants took approximately $28 million from the agency over a period of several years. According to court records, the defendants spent the money on personal expenses and luxury items. Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin issued a report indicating oversight concerns that dated back to 2010.

In addition to the CEO, authorities indicted the agency’s former vice president, an employee and its chief financial officer. The judge sentenced the other co-defendants in the case to prison and restitution following their guilty pleas.
