Two San Fernando Valley residents were sentenced in May for their roles in a $1.8 million Social Security fraud scam involving medically unnecessary power chairs. The pair were convicted following a nine-day trial in Federal Court last year.

Abdul King Garba, 50, of Van Nuys, was sentenced to 21 months in prison. Queen Anieze-Smith, 54, of Woodland Hills, received a four-year home detention sentence. In addition, they were ordered to pay restitution of more than $800,000.

Garba and Anieze-Smith owned a medical supply company in Van Nuys and recruited Medicare-eligible patients and billed Medicare for chairs that the beneficiaries didn’t need. As part of the scam, they submitted fraudulent paperwork to Medicare, but often failed to deliver the chairs.

An experienced Social Security Fraud Attorney

When you’ve been accused of Social Security fraud, you need an experienced Social Security fraud attorney who knows what it takes to defend clients against zealous federal prosecutors. Prosecutors are vigorous in pursuing financial fraud crimes directed at Federal agencies. They have extensive resources to investigate and prosecute financial fraud. Programs like Medicare and Social Security are targets for fraud, so they are monitored and audited carefully for signs of fraud and abuse.

Social Security fraud is common, and prosecutors are very adept at getting convictions. That’s why only an experienced Social Security fraud attorney can provide the defense you will require. Robert Helfend has more than 30 years of criminal defense experience, and works in both federal and state courts.

He handles each case personally, so you will always work directly with Mr. Helfend during the preparation of your defense. He does not pass cases along to less experienced attorneys, as what happens in larger, less personal criminal defense firms.

Take the first step in creating a strong defense for yourself against Social Security fraud charges. Contact Robert Helfend or call toll-free at (800) 834-6434, (310) 456-3317, (818) 591-2809 or (805) 273-5611 for an immediate consultation on your Los Angeles County SSA Fraud case.
