According to media reports, police officers had requested Mahone to “calm down” and get the on the ground, at which point the former wide receiver allegedly responded with a verbal tirade of cursing. An officer then forcefully took Mahone to the ground in order to handcuff him. Mahone allegedly continued shouting profanity at the officers, even going so far as to say “Takes these cuffs off and I’ll kill you. I’ll (expletive) kill you,” according to Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune.
Mahone is accused of trying to assault the police officer whom was transporting him to the back of the cruiser. Mahone allegedly whipped his head back and forth in an attempt to strike the officer’s forehead. Police say they were forced to take down Mahone for a second time due to his unruly nature, stunning the college football athlete to “gain compliance.”
But the incident didn’t end there. Reports suggest that Mahone continued to kick the partition window in the back of the police cruiser, at which point officers responded by stunning him again. Soon after, Mahone began spitting on the seats and windows of the police cruiser. Officers then placed a spit net around Mahone’s head before heading off to the nearby hospital.
Officers had initially intended to transport Mahone to the hospital to treat an eye injury which he received during the altercation, but officers claim Mahone continued to threaten to kill them, so they were forced to take him to the county jail as a precautionary measure.
Mahone is being charged with assault on a police officer (first degree felony), intimidation of a public servant (third degree felon) and vandalism of a government entity (fifth degree felony), as well as disorderly conduct and resisting arrest (both are misdemeanors) There’s been no official response by Notre Dame other than a tweet sent out by Michael Bertsch.
