The California State Appeals Court refused to overturn the murder conviction of a man who allegedly killed 3 people during a drug-related robbery. In a 27-page brief, the Appeals Court found that the balance of the evidence indicated that Harold Yong Parkas killed Pirooz Moussazadeh, 27, Shahriar Moussazadeh,38, and Bernard Khalili, 27 in a West Hollywood apartment in 2010.
According to the brief, evidence showed that Parkas had bought large quantities of marijuana from Moussazadeh, and had exchanged numerous phone calls and text messages indicating that Parkas and the victims intended to meet the evening of the murders for another drug sale. The brief also indicated that at the time of his arrest, Parkas had a large amount of clothing, his identity papers, a passport and $50,000 worth of marijuana in his car, indicating that Parkas had intended to flee the country. The Appeals Court upheld Parkas’ three consecutive life sentences, with no chance for parole.

In California, slightly more than half of all homicides produce a conviction. The statistics are not cut-and-dried because it can sometimes take police and prosecutors years to bring a homicide case to trial. California is a “death penalty state,” which means that if you’re accused of murder, the prosecutor can seek the death penalty if you are convicted.
