A 23-year-old gang member faces murder charges in a USC student’s March death. According to investigators, the suspect and three other men attempted to rob a group of USC students near campus. The suspect shot and killed Victor McElhaney, a student from Oakland, CA.
Police said that the injured man died in a nearby hospital shortly after the suspect shot him and fled. The victim was a senior in USC’s Thornton School of Music. He is the son of Oakland Councilwoman Lynnette Gibson McElhaney. In May, the Los Angeles City Council offered a $50,000 reward for information in the case. Investigators did not say how they came to view the man as a suspect.
In addition to facing murder charges, the prosecutor also asserts two special allegations. One is murder in the course of an armed robbery. The other is murder while being an active gang member. The special circumstances make the suspect eligible for the death penalty.
