Clarence Duwell Dear, 51, of Pomona, was arrested last month on a bus from Pasadena in connection with the Christmas Day murder of a 41-year-old Pomona woman during a domestic dispute. Pomona police were called to a residence by neighbors who said that the victim, Dawn Hensley, had been set on fire. When police arrived, they found the woman, who had been doused with gasoline before being set on fire. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Two days later, Pasadena police responded to a tip that the suspect, who had been identified by neighbors, may be boarding a bus in Pasadena. Police intercepted the bus and arrested the man without incident. He is being held without bail.
Murder suspect faces multiple charges
In addition to the murder charge, Dear faces a special circumstance enhancement of torture, which makes him eligible for the death penalty. He also faces a single count of cruelty to a child for endangering the health of his 12-year-old son, who was home at the time of his mother’s murder.
