A 28-year-old San Gabriel man with ties to an Asian street gang known as United Bamboo was convicted by a Los Angeles County jury of first-degree murder in connection with the death of a restaurant owner in Alhambra. The jury also convicted Xia Lin of felony weapons charges and gang related activity. United Bamboo has been active in Los Angeles since the 1960’s, and is known for its extortion, drug trafficking and prostitution activities. Lin could be sentenced to 50 years to life in prison next month on the LA County murder charge.
DNA Evidence linked suspect to LA County Murder
Police say that Lin went to the home of Qui Jin Fang, owner of a Chinese restaurant in September 2013 and shot the victim multiple times after Fang refused to turn over cash in what police believe was a gang-related extortion attempt. Police found nearly $10,000 in cash in the victim’s vehicle. Lin fled the scene when neighbors called the police. Investigators found the gun used in the shooting in a nearby theater, and found a second loaded pistol, a ski mask and hooded sweatshirt, both of which contained DNA evidence from the crime scene. DNA evidence from the scene was also found on the gun retrieved from the theater.
