Identity theft raids nab a dozen
Police in Los Angeles and Orange counties conducted coordinated raids to arrest identity theft suspects. The arrests follow a multi-year federal investigation of an identity theft ring that operated from La Mirada, La Habra, Norwalk and Whittier.

Police arrested a dozen suspected participants in the ring. An additional two suspects remain at large. A federal grand jury authorized a 27-count indictment against the suspects. Prosecutors allege that the group used skimmers to capture credit and debit card information from local restaurants. Each of the participants is charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud. They face a maximum of 30 years in federal prison if convicted on all charges.

After collecting card information, the suspects would encode blank cards with the stolen accounts and make major purchases at retailers like Apple, Home Depot and Nordstrom.

Authorities also brought drug charges against some of the identity theft suspects. They accused at least three men connected to the identity theft ring with also participating in a drug trafficking ring that moved major quantities of methamphetamine.
