A federal jury convicted a Pasadena businesswoman of Medicare fraud last month. According to prosecutors, the woman, who owns a Pasadena pharmacy, filed $1.3M in fraudulent claims. Prosecutors say that most of the claims represented drugs that no one prescribed or dispensed to patients.
The jury convicted the woman of one count of health care fraud and two counts of wire fraud. Investigators say the woman began submitting fraudulent claims in 2015. The federal indictment indicated that the woman used accomplices, but those individuals remain unknown.
The pharmacy began to submit bills to Medicare and Medicare Part D for prescription drugs. Investigators could not find matching prescriptions. Further the bills did not represent drugs the pharmacy had purchased or dispensed at any time. During the investigation, the woman produced falsified invoice requests that purported to show drug orders. The lists were hand-written and represented four months during 2017.
The woman will return to court on February 25, 2019 for sentencing. She could face up to 10 years on the Medicare fraud charge and as much as 20 years on each wire fraud charge.
