According to police, the man used the league’s funds for his personal expenses. Records show that the man purchased dinners, electronics, personal purchases over a three-year period. Police did not investigate the possibility of prior thefts. During the period police investigated, the man embezzled more than $100,000 from the group.

A board member of the youth league asked police to investigate Melnick after becoming suspicious of the man. Police initiated their investigation in October 2019. When officers searched the man’s home, they recovered a number of items purchased with the stolen funds. He faces six counts of felony grand theft. At his arraignment, the man pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. He faces as much as 6 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The man will return to court on February 27 for matters related to his case.

Los Angeles Embezzlement Attorney

When you face charges related to theft from an employer (even if your position is volunteer), hire an experienced embezzlement attorney like Robert Helfend. Mr. Helfend has more than 35 years of experience exclusively in criminal defense. He takes criminal cases in Los Angeles County and throughout Southern California.

Embezzlement usually gets a lot of attention because the dollar amounts involved can be high. Most victims want justice, but justice often includes full repayment. Imposing a long prison term actually frustrates the victims’ search for justice. In many cases, it makes recovery of the stolen funds all but impossible.

Justice is often better served by enabling the accused to make full restitution. This means allowing the person to work and earn a meaningful income. It also provides the best chance for making full restitution.

Don’t settle for inexperienced counsel and don’t attempt to represent yourself in court.
