DUI Arrests Skyrocket For Memorial Day Weekend
Nearly 1,100 people need a, DUI defense lawyer following this year’s Memorial Day weekend. According to the California Highway Patrol, its officers arrested 1,099 people suspected of drunk driving.

In addition, 34 people died in 21 DUI-related accidents during the holiday period. About half of those people were not wearing seatbelts at the time of their deaths.

The number of arrests represents a 4% increase over the same period in 2018. While arrests were up, the number of fatalities decreased from last year. In 2018, 37 people died in DUI-related accidents over the holiday period. The CHP holiday enforcement period began Friday afternoon and ended Monday night at 11:59 PM. Within the first 30 hours of the holiday weekend, officers had made nearly 750 arrests and responded to 18 highway fatalities.

DUI laws have recently changed in California. First-time offenders are likely to receive stiffer penalties than they may have in the past. In addition, they will be required to use an ignition interlock device on their vehicles.

When you face charges for drunk driving, hire an experienced DUI lawyer like Robert Helfend. Mr. Helfend has 35 years of experience in criminal defense. In his decades of practice, he has defended thousands of Californians charged with drunk driving.

Most drunk driving cases result in misdemeanor charges. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a misdemeanor isn’t serious! Even a first arrest can result in thousands of dollars in fines and related expenses, and the suspension of your driver’s license. In addition, you could be required to serve jail time, take driver retraining classes and meet other sentencing requirements.

Some people also believe that they can defend themselves in court. This is quite possibly the worst possible way to “save money.” Hiring a professional defense attorney can make a major difference in the outcome of your case.
