Los Angeles Rams safety T.J. McDonald was charged with a misdemeanor count of DUI, after a traffic accident that occurred in May. McDonald was arrested after he hit a parked car in Woodland Hills. Police confirmed that McDonald was not drunk at the time of the accident, but may have been under the influence of medication when the accident occurred.
McDonald missed the last four games of the 2015-16 season due to a shoulder injury. He is on the active roster, having played in Game 1 of the season. If convicted, McDonald faces a fine of $1,000 and up to six months in the county jail. In addition, McDonald could face supplemental discipline from the team, the league or both.
Los Angeles DUI Lawyer
Many people don’t realize that being under the influence of medication while driving can result in the same penalties as driving under the influence of alcohol. Medications, illicit drugs and alcohol are all considered intoxicants. The law does not distinguish between them, even if (in the case of medications) they’ve been prescribed for a legitimate medical purpose. That’s why you need an experienced DUI lawyer to assist you in court.
The resulting penalties are also the same. A DUI arrest results in an immediate suspension of your driver’s license. The initial suspension by the DMV is not part of the criminal process, so a court can impose additional license restrictions during the criminal process.
Intoxicated driving can either be charged as a misdemeanor or felony. How an incident is charged depends upon the circumstances of the case. Other factors can include any past history of intoxicated driving and whether or not someone has been injured or killed as the result of intoxicated driving.
Intoxicated driving charges are complex, and having an experienced DUI lawyer beside you in court is your best strategy. DUI convictions can cost much more than the fines and penalties imposed by the court. They can also cost you your job, your family and more. Don’t let a DUI conviction ruin your life.
