A Covina physician will plead guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering in connection with a scheme to profit from writing prescriptions for the controlled substance Oxycontin. Daniel Cham was arrested after selling a prescription to an undercover investigator for $300. The undercover officer provided a $300 money order, which Cham then deposited into a business account. Investigators say the business account was a sham intended to help disguise the source of the funds.
Drug trafficking indictment is from 2014
Cham was originally indicted by a federal grand jury in 2014. The indictment included charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, making false statements to authorities and fraud. Cham worked from multiple offices in and around Los Angeles County. Authorities claim that Cham falsified information on prescriptions, including post-dating the prescriptions to make them appear as though they had been written at times when his clinics were open. According to investigators, Cham wrote more than 5,000 prescriptions for controlled substances over the course of a single year, which equates to 15-20 prescriptions per day. From 2010 until the time of his arrest, Cham wrote more than 42,000 prescriptions for controlled substances.
